What affects the price

  • Area treated in square feet
  • Material: rock salt, treated salt, or calcium chloride
  • Per-application vs. included in a seasonal ice-management contract
  • Whether pre-treatment before a storm is part of the service

When to book

Pre-treating before a storm prevents ice from bonding to pavement and takes far less material than breaking up ice afterwards. For commercial properties, documented pre-treatment is also the core of slip-and-fall defence.

Salting Service: common questions

Answers from the providers who do this work every day.

When should salt be applied?

Ideally before precipitation starts, which stops ice bonding to the surface. If you have missed that window, apply as soon as accumulation begins rather than waiting for it to freeze solid.

Which de-icer works in very cold weather?

Rock salt loses effectiveness below roughly 15°F. Calcium chloride works to about -25°F and generates its own heat as it dissolves, which is why it costs more.

Will salt damage my concrete or plants?

Repeated rock salt is hard on concrete under a year old and on adjacent plantings and lawn edges. Treated or blended products and correct application rates reduce it considerably — over-applying is the usual culprit.
